Bed Placement - Where to Position Your Bed to Create a Functional Bedroom
A bed is an essential piece of furniture in a bedroom, naturally becoming its central point. All pieces of furniture in a bedroom are generally arranged in a specific way. The positioning is based on a few primary rules. Skilled interior designers will always suggest you position the bed depending on the size and proportion of your bedroom.
You should consider placing the bed on the central axis if the floor plan is square. However, in case the floor plan is rectangular, consider dividing your room into zones. For example, place your bed in one zone, and the chairs and table in another. Bed placement is generally about common sense. Getting it right helps to create a more functional bedroom space.
Bed Placement in a Master Bedroom
- People generally consider positioning a queen-sized, king-sized, or double bed against the center of a wall right opposite the entrance of the room. In this arrangement, the headboard is located right at the center of the space. This placement works well in a room with a square layout.
- Avoid placing your bed under a window, especially if you decide to open it frequently. This can create uncomfortable drafts. However, setting your bed in between two widows functions well. You can ignore this arrangement if you keep the air conditioning on all year round and rarely open the windows.
- At times, the dimensions of the room may prevent you from positioning the bed against the wall. In such instances, choose a wall that is wide enough to place the bed comfortably.
- You can even arrange your furniture in a non-traditional way if it frees up a considerable amount of space in the room. For example, you can position the bed diagonally facing a secure window even though it takes up some extra space or place it along the wall, which will help maximize the available floor space.
- Avoid positioning a bed where it impedes the flow of movement in the space or the door opening into the room.
- Consider having a low bed if you have a small bedroom space. You can use a headboard, but avoid using a foot-board. A four-poster bed wouldn't be practical in such a setting as it takes up a considerable amount of space visually, making your room to appear smaller.
- An open space on either side of the bed is a must for adults. On average it is advised to have around 18" on both sides. Avoid positioning the bed up against the wall, as it can make moving incredibly tricky for the person using that side.
- You can place bedside tables that are proportionate to the available space. These tables will prove to be extremely helpful if you watch TV in bed and you need to have some extra space for them.
Placement of a Bed in a Guest Bedroom
When you set a room aside for guests, it just doesn't make their stay more relaxed, but yours as well. You can set up the guest room by placing a grand bed and placing all the other essential elements in it. Here are a few suggestions that can make your guest room significantly more comfortable:
- Based on the space available, you can place a daybed or even a sofa bed that fits perfectly against the wall. These beds are incredibly adaptable, making them the perfect option for a home office or a guest room.
- You must leave enough area for movement in the room.
- Consider installing a Murphy bed that can be folded up against a wall or closet.
Creating a functional bedroom is more than just getting the bed placement right. It's also crucial to make sure that the rest of the features and furniture are proportionate and positioned correctly.
